I never received this product as the tracking shows it has been held up at some random post office for the past 2 months. I contacted the seller to report this issue and requested a refund. It's obvious the seller does not care that I haven't received the product I paid for or are they understanding enough to provide a refund. To this day, I have not heard from the seller. These vibrant snapshots of early life on the Mississippi River fascinated me. They still do.

Dubuque has two of Iowa’s many examples of Depression-era federally funded mural projects. The most impressive are Grant Wood’s at the Iowa State University Library, but there are others, including 34 functioning post offices proudly displaying murals funded by the United StatesTreasury department during the Great Depression.
The movement to produce works of art in public spaces was influenced both locally and nationally by prominent Iowans. Wood, already famous for painting "American Gothic, " would mentor several Iowa post office muralists while teaching at the University of Iowa. Iowan Harry Hopkins, who led Franklin Roosevelt’s Works Projects Administration (WPA), had long been a leading advocate for Americans in need. He famously responded when asked why federal funds should support art by quipping, “Artists have to eat, too.”
I’ve made a point of seeing many of these post office murals randomly scattered across the state. The postal workers I spoke with were pleased to assist, even though most couldn’t tell me much about the art. And though they said locals take little notice of the murals, the postal clerks seemed to get a kick out of a random stream of strangers like me showing up to ask questions and take photos. Multiple stories of a bus load of art historians emptying into their lobbies with cameras positioned like bird watchers chasing a rare species were recounted with a mixture of pride and humor.

For me, visiting these post offices started as a way to reconnect with my past. I was born in Manchester, a town with a post office mural, and I lived near three others growing up: Dewitt, Marion and Dubuque. My grandfather’s farm in Jones County was located near one in Monticello. Over the last several months I’ve visited each of them, like a pilgrimage.
The scenes depicted focus mostly on everyday farming life and serve as wholesome reminders of Iowa’s heritage. But some tell a more specific, complex story. In Pella, for example, the mural shows the persecuted Dutch making their way to settle in Iowa. In Ames, the mural parallels corn’s central influence over the cultures of Iowa and Mexico.
The mission of the U.S. Treasury-commissioned artwork – where 1 percentof the cost of new federal construction was to be devoted to public art, seems a small price to pay to put starving artists to work and to document Iowa history and values in a way that has lasted nearly a century. I wonder how many boys and girls have stood in a post office line bored stiff save for the mural above the postmaster’s door. Today I fear most kids stand there fixated on a handheld electronic device. I hope they occasionally escape their digital world and get lost in the analog stories these murals tell. Perhaps some still come away like I did – a 10-year-old leaving Dubuque’s post office with a greater appreciation and newfound curiosity for my state.

Post offices might not be as central to many of our lives as they once were, but they are still fundamental pillars of our communities. Visit one with a mural and I bet you will feel the sense of gravitas and wonder it brings to the space.Visit several and you will connect with the rich history and character of our ancestors. I, for one, see myself like that bus load of gawking tourists – just curious enough to visit all of them.
